First quarter sales are out for 2008. While album sales are continuing to decline, the digital sales are picking up the slack. Overall album sales are down 10.7%, but track downloads are increasing by 28.7%. If you calculate 10 tracks as an album, then album sales are only down 4.5%. Four albums broke the 100,000 mark, which is the first time any album has reached that mark in the first quarter since the digital era. Four songs have broken the million download mark this year and 26 are over 500,000, compared to last year with only 12 over that mark by this time. Universal led the way with an increase to 31.8%, followed by Sony/BMG (down to 25.2%), Warner (up to 20.1%), EMI (down to 8.7%), and independents (up to 14.2%).
